Domain FAQ (specifically for dealing with NetworkSolutions)

How do I modify nameservers for my domain registered at Network Solutions?

This information applies only to networksolutions:

First check WHOIS to see if there is an Administrative or Technical Contact with an email address where you or someone else can receive mail that is sent to it.

If you have a valid email address for the Administrative or Technical Contact of your domain name, then you can use Network Solution's change form. Go to that form and enter the email address of the Administrative or Technical Contact along with the domain name that you are modifying. Then click the "Submit" button. On the resulting page, scroll down and erase all the listed nameservers, replacing them with just our nameservers. Here you also have the option of changing the current Administrative or Technical Contact. When finished, click the submit button.

Then hostmaster@internic.net will send a confirmation email to the Contact that you entered on the first page of the form. That email can only be answered by the Administrative or Technical Contact of the domain.

This email must be replied to in Plain Text, not HTML mail, and must also include NetSol's original message in the reply (not as an attachment). If your mail program is set to send HTML mail (which allows pretty formatting, fonts and images) then you must change this for this reply. In Outlook, you can change the Compose setting under the Tools, Options, Sending Mail or Mail Format tab. In Netscape Messenger, it is under Edit, Preferences, Mail & Newsgroups, Formatting.

It will also help if you set your "From" address to be the same as the email address of the Administrative or Technical Contact that the mail was sent to, if it is not set to that already.

When Network Solutions receives your reply, it will either tell you that the requested changes are accepted and completed, in which case the changes will take effect in 24 hours, or it will tell you that the reply did not appear to come from the right person and therefore it has sent another confirmation.

If you receive the mail requesting a second confirmation, you will have to reply to that one the same as before, but also edit the original message by typing the following on it:

Scroll down the message until you see a line numbered "0a". On line 0a leave a space after the colon ":" and type: Mail-From
Then on line 1 leave a space after the colon ":" and type: Y

Then send the message. You should then receive a final message from Network Solutions saying that the modifications are complete and will take effect in 24 hours.

If both your Administrative and Technical Contacts' email addresses are invalid or you cannot receive mail at them, then read the following FAQ.

How do I change nameservers on my domain registration at Network Solutions when I cannot receive mail at my Administrative and Technical Contact addresses?

If none of your Contacts are valid anymore, and your domain is registered through Network Solutions, you can try to use their support chat, but you will probably have to fax or mail them directly to prove who you are before they will change anything for you - unless the following works for you:

Assuming you cannot follow this other FAQ because your Administrative and Technical Contacts are either invalid or you are unable to receive mail at them, you may still have an "Account Number and Password" at Network Solutions that you can use to login to their website to make changes to your registration. To recover your "Account Number" if you do not know it, go here and type in your domain name where it says "Search by Domain Name" and submit. If you have an Account Number, the form will try to mail it to an email address that Network Solutions has on record for you. With luck, it will not be the same email address of the Contacts that you cannot access.

If there was no Account Number for your domain, or you cannot receive the mail giving it to you, then you will have to contact Network Solutions directly. Otherwise, if you do receive an email containing your Account Number, take the Account Number and plug it back into this form in the field where it says "Account Number/Login" and submit that. That will cause the Password to be sent to the same email address. Once you have the Account Number and Password, use them to go to this form and login with them.

Once logged in, go to "Change Nameservers" and delete all nameservers from the registration, replacing them with just ours. This would also be a good time to fix your Administrative and Technical Contacts by giving them valid email addresses that you can access.

Once the changes are made successfully, it will be 24 hours until they take effect.
